    Liberia confirms 4 Active Mpox Cases

    —As NPHIL Hails Liberian Celebrity for Availing himself to Health Authorities

    IPNEWS: Liberia Health authorities have confirmed four active Mpox virus cases in the country.

    Addressing a joint Press conference Sunday, the Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) is Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan stated that four active Mpox cases comes from Montserrado, Margibi, Grand Cape Mount and Sinoe Counties

    He said since 2024, NPHI has instituted the 717 system intended to handle surveillance  alert , receive the information, and address various alerts within seven days, and not more.

    Dr. Nyan stated that through this robust system, with the joint efforts of both the Ministry of Health, World Health Organization and technical assistance from the Africa Center for Disease Control, Liberia now has the capacity to test and sequence various pathogens with  an assurance rate of 90% making it earlier  to allowing other neighboring countries such as Sierra Leone to conduct its Mpox test here in Liberia.

    The Liberia Inventor, told Journalist that at current Liberia has the ability to address any form out health emergency within 72 hours, or less than 72 through the combine efforts of Liberia Health system through various level of cooperation and collaboration.

    Dr. Nyan said prior to the additional active case Liberia had accounted for 78 active case from November 2024-March 2025.

    A total of 77 persons were discharge after the incubation period and sent home with contact persons line-listed for treated as well.

    The remaining one patient, was still been treated prior to the discovery of the additional three, now bringing the total active Mpox cases in Liberia at four cases. He state that Upon notification in Montserrado County, health authorities made immediate contact with the individual and have transferred the patient to the National Infectious Disease Center for continuous professional medical care.

    He lauded members of the Liberian Media for supporting NPHIL and the Ministry of Health  in providing education among each other and the general public  in terms of ‘what a suspected case is’, and what must be done in case of those sign and symptoms’.

    Dr. Nyan further stated that Liberia continues to monitor the current Mpox surge in Neighboring Sierra Leone and will begin immediate surveillance and community engagement activities along the Liberia. Sierra Leone and Guinean Boarders to ensure experiences of the Ebola virus does not be repeated.

    ‘And for a very long period, as you will note, there was no misinformation circulating because the president actually grasped what these terminologies were. which were previously been misapplied. So thank you very much in that respect.  In this particular situation, with this recent internet circulation of suspected case, and self-proclaimed, which we really hailed. But Again, the press has been very, very, very professional in dealing with us as a public health medical institution. You didn’t go out publishing stuff, you waited. We saw all your calls, we saw all your text messages, and we kept telling you we are addressing it.

    Speaking on behalf of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Yowa Nemah, Program Manager, Expanded Program on Immunization  stated that the Ministry remains fully committed to maintaining public health safety across the country. And urged all citizens to remain calm and adhere to the following precautionary measures by Reporting symptoms promptly: Anyone experiencing rash, fever, headache or unusual symptoms is advised to avoid close contact with others and immediately seek medical attention at the nearest health facility.

    He encouraged the public to Cooperate with health teams to ensure Suspected cases ware handled by trained professionals, and appropriate samples will be collected for testing.

    Dr. Nemah maintained that all confirmed cases will receive expert professional medical care at identified health facility

    Additionally, the Ministry is pleased to inform the public that Liberia has received Mpox vaccines. Vaccination is one of the counter measures to interrupt the human to human spread of Mpox. To date, over 2000 persons in the counties of Cape mount, Nimba, Grand Bassa and Sinoe counties, have been vaccinated against Mpox in Liberia.
