Liberia: Liberia Airport Authority Welcomes Turkish Support Initiative for RIA Revitalization

IPNEWS: he Management of the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has warmly welcomed the Government’s successful diplomatic efforts to secure technical and financial support from the Republic of Türkey for the revitalization of the Roberts International Airport (RIA).

In a statement released Monday, April 14, the LAA expressed optimism about the move, hailing it as a major milestone in the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize its aviation sector.

The Authority extended commendation to the Government of Liberia, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for the proactive diplomatic engagement that led to the breakthrough.

The Turkish support follows a direct and high-level diplomatic appeal by Liberia’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the recent Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

The closed-door meeting between the two leaders resulted in a swift response from President Erdoğan, who instructed Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, to act immediately on Liberia’s proposal.

“We are truly encouraged by this development and are prepared to work closely with the high-level Turkish team expected in Liberia,” the LAA statement noted.

“This collaboration holds the potential to transform Roberts International Airport into a modern, efficient hub that meets international standards and supports Liberia’s broader development goals.”

Minister Uraloğlu, in response to President Erdoğan’s directive, confirmed that a Turkish technical delegation will soon arrive in Liberia to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the RIA infrastructure and explore avenues for strategic investment and cooperation.

The LAA emphasized that the revitalization of RIA, originally constructed in the 1940s, is a national priority due to its role as Liberia’s primary international gateway.

Years of underinvestment have left the facility in need of substantial upgrades to meet the growing demands of air traffic and cargo operations.

“This initiative is not just about infrastructure, it’s about national growth, tourism, trade, and the international image of Liberia,” the statement continued.

“We commend Foreign Minister Nyanti for her vision and assertive diplomacy, which have begun to yield tangible results for our country.”

President Joseph Boakai has consistently emphasized infrastructure as a cornerstone of his administration’s development agenda.

Minister Nyanti echoed this vision during her appeal to the Turkish President, noting that Liberia seeks partnerships that empower its people and build long-term capacity.

The anticipated Turkish support for RIA fits within a larger strategic framework of economic diplomacy being advanced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under Minister Nyanti’s leadership.

Beyond aviation, this approach has already led to development partnerships in areas such as women’s empowerment and artisanal manufacturing.

With Turkish investment and expertise already playing a transformative role in several African countries, Liberia’s engagement with Türkey marks an important step toward unlocking new economic opportunities and positioning the country as a viable destination for global partnerships.

The LAA reaffirmed its readiness to cooperate fully with all stakeholders to ensure the success of the initiative.

The LAA has further pledged to provide the necessary technical support, data, and local coordination to facilitate the mission of the incoming Turkish delegation.

“As custodians of the country’s gateway to the world, we are proud to be part of this historic step forward,” the LAA concluded.

The Turkish delegation’s arrival is expected soon and will include technical consultations, infrastructure evaluations, and dialogue on financing mechanisms.

If successful, the collaboration could lay the foundation for the comprehensive modernization of RIA and Liberia’s aviation.
