IPNEWS: Dr. Nathan F. Mahteh General Surgeon, ArcelorMittal Liberia Hospital System

The ArcelorMittal Liberia Hospital System about two years embarked on a transformational journey with series of strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and optimizing service delivery. These include upgrades to hospital facilities in Yekepa and Buchanan, investment in advanced technologies, and building of a highly skilled and professional workforce.

Aligned to this plan, the company recently welcomed to its Buchanan Hospital team, Dr. Nathan F. Mahteh, a General Surgeon, ahead of the official start of surgical operations at the hospital. He is one of two surgeons recently hired by AML to head its surgical theaters in Buchanan and Yekepa.

The move marks a significant step forward in the company’s commitment to providing exceptional healthcare services including minimal emergency surgical procedures, as part of efforts to improve services at its hospitals.

Dr. Mahteh, a highly respected surgeon with over eight years of experience in the field, brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the AML Hospital. He is renowned for his innovative approaches to surgical procedures and his dedication to patient-centered care.

Dr. Mahteh completed his medical degrees at Achille Mario Dogliotti College of Medicine at the University of Liberia, and the Liberia College of Physician and Surgeons, and also acquired other international qualifications. He has held various leadership positions in surgical departments across the country, including Chief for surgery at the Esther & Jereline Medical Center in Ganta and the 14th Military Hospital in Margibi.

He also previously served at C.B. Dunbar Maternity Hospital in Bong, Jackson F. Doe Memorial Hospital in Nimba, Redemption Hospital in Montserrado, J.J. Dossen Hospital in Maryland, and John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia among others, where he consistently demonstrated a commitment to excellence in both clinical practice and education.

As Chief of Surgery, Dr. Mahteh will oversee all surgical operations at the AML Buchanan hospital. His leadership is expected to foster a collaborative environment that prioritizes safety, quality, and innovation.

Enthusiastic about his role and joining AML, Dr. Mahteh has assured of patients’ confidence in the healthcare system.

“It’s a pleasure coming over to ArcelorMittal Liberia. AML is a nice family that I have found, again. The working spirit here is very good and cooperative. As we prepare to begin surgical operations, I can assure that we will have a good coverage of cases here with positive outcomes. We have a lot of good equipment here that we can work with to produce good results.”

He also assured of better patient care, as cardinal to post surgical healing.

“One thing I tell people about surgery is it’s not just to go and cut, but it’s the patient care after you have done that surgery. I see a lot of good nurses here who have been offering patient care. So, I as a doctor as I work, those nurses can also be my support system so that we can achieve good care for our patients before and even after surgery. That’s a very good reliance for me.”

The official commencement of surgical services at AML Hospitals in Buchanan and Yekepa is set to take place in the coming weeks, with a range of procedures planned to be offered, including general surgery.

“As far as plans to begin offering minimal emergency surgical procedures, both surgeons are keen on starting as soon as possible,” said AML Chief Medical Officer Dr. Garfee Williams.

Dr. Williams said the team is well on course with the schedule to begin handling and managing surgical procedures at both the Buchanan and Yekepa hospitals. .
