IPNEWS: Rule of Law Caucus Calls for Boycott Under Koon’s Speakership
The Rule of Law Caucus has declared that it will no longer sit under the leadership of Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, whom they describe as “unconstitutionally elected Speaker.”
The caucus, led by Chairman Representative Musa Bility, made the announcement at a press conference,, asserting that Koon’s position has been deemed illegal by the Supreme Court of Liberia.
“The Supreme Court has provided a clear ruling, declaring Speaker Koon’s election invalid,” Bility stated. “As representatives of the Rule of Law Caucus, we cannot and will not legitimize an illegitimate process.
We call upon all honorable members to join us in boycotting any legislative session presided over by Koon.”
The chairman’s remarks were aimed not only at his colleagues in the legislature but also at various international bodies.
Bility urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), the United States (US), the European Union (EU), the United Nations (UN), and other global entities to refrain from engaging with Koon and his administration.
“We appeal to the international community to stand firm in their support for the rule of law in Liberia,” he said. “Engaging with Koon and his cohorts only undermines our democracy and sets a dangerous precedent for governance.”
Bility further urged the Liberian Senate to sever ties with Koon and called on the Executive branch to refuse to conduct business with him. “Any nation that does not believe in the rule of law is destined for chaos,” he warned.
“We are at a critical juncture, and it is imperative that we uphold the principles of justice and democracy; adding that they will join the legitimate House Speaker Cllr Fonati Koffa by boycotting Koon.
The tensions surrounding Koon’s leadership continue to mount, with the potential for political instability as the Rule of Law Caucus seeks to rally support from other lawmakers and citizens.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on Liberia’s government and the international community’s response to these developments.
The Rule of Law Caucus is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that Liberia adheres to constitutional principles
