IPNEWS: High school and university students from Nimba and Grand Bassa counties gathered for an enriching day at a career fair organized by ArcelorMittal Liberia. The events, held simultaneously in the coastal city of Buchanan and the mining town of Yekepa, were part of the company’s Employee Volunteer Week, commemorating International Volunteer Day.

The career fair aimed to connect students with potential career paths in the mining and industrial sectors, providing them with valuable insights into the opportunities available within ArcelorMittal and the broader industry. Students had the chance to engage with company representatives, learn about various roles, and gain advice on how to prepare for their future careers.

2024 Employees Volunteer Week activities chair, Lois Abudu noted AML’s interest in investing in young people. “This career fair is an opportunity for students to explore their interests, ask questions, and understand the skills needed to succeed in the workforce,” Abudu said.

The event featured interactive workshops, panel discussions, and informational booths showcasing different departments within the company. Students were encouraged to ask questions and network with professionals, gaining firsthand knowledge about the skills and qualifications required in the mining and industrial sectors.

Presenters included the head of AML legal department, Cllr. Boakai Paegar, Rail Maintenance Manager, Mulbah Gbozee, Phase II Project Director, Denis Rivard, Nursing Service Directress, Berlin Bonor, Finance Manager, Dorbor Kpangbala, Cost Control Superintendent, Joe Manley, Employees Relations Superintendent, Head of Health and Safety, Ahmad Massaquoi and Employee Relations Superintendent, Lucy Sherman. Others included H.R. Business Partner, Patience Jordan Kargbah, Environmental Manager, Alvin Poure and Superintendent, Duke Davis, among others.

Participants expressed enthusiasm about the event, with many noting the importance of such initiatives in helping them make informed decisions about their future careers. “This fair has opened my eyes to the various opportunities available in the mining industry,” said a student from Grand Bassa County interested in engineering. “I never realized how many different roles there are, and I feel more motivated to pursue a career in this field.”

In addition to career exploration, the event highlighted AML’s commitment to community engagement and development.

The career fair not only served as a platform for students to explore potential career paths but also reinforced the company’s dedication to fostering the next generation of professionals in the country. As the event concluded, students left with newfound knowledge, inspiration, and a clearer vision of their future careers.
