IPNEWS: Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Richard Nagbe Koon, has paid an official visit to the Monrovia Central Prison (MCP) to assess the conditions of inmates and gain firsthand insight into the overall state of Liberia’s largest correctional facility.

Upon his arrival, Speaker Koon received a warm welcome from senior prison authorities, including the Chairman of the Independent Parole Board, Mr. Stanley Cooper, and the Assistant Director of Prisons for Operations, Mr. Lawrence G. Bohlen. The officials jointly escorted the Speaker on a detailed tour of the prison compound, guiding him through various sections of the facility and highlighting key operational areas.

During the inspection, Speaker Koon listened to comprehensive briefings from prison administrators, who outlined the challenges facing the correctional system, including overcrowding, limited resources, and infrastructure needs. They also discussed ongoing reform initiatives and the priority interventions required to strengthen the sector.

Speaker Koon reaffirmed the Legislature’s commitment to enhancing the justice and corrections landscape, stressing that the welfare, dignity, and humane treatment of inmates remain national priorities. He emphasized that improving correctional institutions is essential not only for upholding human rights but also for fostering rehabilitation and reducing recidivism.

“The Legislature is determined to support efforts that promote humane living conditions, expand rehabilitation programs, and create a more efficient and just corrections system,” he assured.

The Speaker also commended the Ministry of Justice, through the Bureau of Corrections and Rehabilitation (BCR), for its ongoing transformation initiatives at the Monrovia Central Prison. He praised the leadership and staff for their dedication to modernizing prison operations and improving inmate care despite resource constraints.

Speaker Koon’s visit signals a renewed push for collaborative action and policy reforms aimed at strengthening Liberia’s correctional institutions and advancing a justice system that balances accountability with compassion.
