IPNEWS: More than twenty-five firefighters at the National Port Authority (NPA) have undergone specialized training aimed at improving safety, security, and operational efficiency at Liberia’s ports.
The training was conducted under the SCOPE Africa Initiative, a European Union–backed program focused on enhancing port systems across West and Central Africa.
Speaking at the close of the four-day exercise, NPA Deputy Managing Director for Administration James R. Bernard commended the initiative, describing it as a critical step toward aligning Liberia’s port operations with international safety and security standards.
According to Bernard, the training marks the beginning of a broader capacity-building effort targeting various security units within the NPA, with firefighters serving as the first group of beneficiaries.
He noted that the program is designed to strengthen compliance with global standards, improve crisis response and risk management systems, and enhance collaboration between port authorities and government institutions.
“This is a strategic breakthrough that validates the sweeping reforms underway across the Freeport of Monrovia and our outstation ports,” Bernard said, emphasizing that the initiative will provide access to technical support, security upgrades, and governance tools necessary for modern trade demands.
Also speaking, SCOPE Africa Training Coordinator Sendy Cranton said the intervention is intended to reinforce Liberia’s port security framework and boost operational performance at key facilities, including the Freeport of Monrovia.
Cranton added that improving port safety, efficiency, and resilience will better position Liberia to manage increasing cargo volumes, attract foreign investment, and compete within regional and continental trade networks.
The SCOPE Africa Initiative is designed to enhance the resilience of African ports against emerging maritime threats, while promoting safer and more efficient trade.
Liberia is participating in the program through its engagement with the Port Management Association of West and Central Africa (PMAWCA).
