Citizens and residents of Lower Tewor District in Grand Cape Mount County have unanimously resolved to rehabilitate the 23.3km (13.7 miles, 22000 meters) stretch of road from Tienii Town to Sawellor Town. According to the citizens, the ambitious Initiative is put at approximately USD1,000,000.00 (ONE MILLION UNITED STATES DOLLAR) and is citizen-driven. This citizen-driven means they are mobilizing their citizens and residents at home and its vast Diaspora community to support their Initiative financially and materially.
The citizens and residents of Lower Tewor District reached the historic decision at a mass meeting in Gbesseh Town on January 19, 2025. The moment was a display of unity and a powerful testament to their determination. They resolved to combine their individual and collective efforts and resources to rehabilitate the road, inspiring all who witnessed their resolve.
Though the citizens are conscious that rehabilitating the Tienii-Sawellor corridor remains the statutory responsibility of the national Government, their action is a testament to their resilience. They are committed to alleviating the hardships posed by the road’s dire condition, despite the long period in which the road had not been conditioned for more than three decades. They described this as an act of abandonment by successive governments, but their determination to change the situation is truly impressive.
At the same time, the citizens expressed their optimism for the future. They are collaborating with the current Government through the Ministry of Public Works, Bea Mountain Company, and others to get the job done. They are hopeful that when the “Tienii-Sawellor” corridor is rehabilitated, it will facilitate the easy transport of goods and services between towns and villages and Robertsport City.
According to them, this will reduce transportation costs, lower the prices of goods and services, and enable local businesses to thrive. It will also open new trade opportunities, boosting the local economy and providing sustainable livelihoods for many families.
As part of the Initiative, the citizens will host an elaborate program to formally launch the project on Friday, February 28, 2025, in Sawellor Town. The launch will bring together senior Government officials, including the Minister of Public Works, who is expected to serve as the Chief launcher; the Cape Mount Legislative caucus, Bea Mountain as the Co-launcher; business representatives, citizens of Cape Mount, and Liberians in general. During the formal launch, the organizers will hold a fundraising rally to raise the initial funding for the Initiative.
