Several citizens from the district have expressed to this paper that reviewing the concession agreements with both companies is a significant step towards improving the livelihoods of Liberians residing in the district. They believe this process will provide a mechanism through which affected communities within the concession areas can become direct beneficiaries of essential services.
The residents noted that both the Cavalla Rubber Corporation (CRC) and the Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (MOPP) have been operating in Maryland County for over a decade without revisiting the agreements made by previous management and governments. They argue that this situation has led to poor labor practices and brought in foreigners to occupy positions that Marylanders and other Liberians are fully capable of holding.
In the areas where these companies operate, there are no hospitals for workers’ children, no schools, and while they initially established camps for workers to stay, those facilities have since been destroyed. The residents are left questioning the motives behind this decision and are still waiting for a response from the companies. Additionally, there is a lack of safe drinking water, among other pressing needs.
