For the first time in 40 years, the Government of Liberia under te stewardship of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has officially launched the direct import of petroleum products into Liberia, making Petroleum Products more available and lower prices for ordinary Liberians.
The government of Liberia on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, brought in a huge shipment of 10,000 metric tons (about 3.5 million gallons) of petroleum products containing gasoline and fuel.
The importation of the petroleum products are intended to sure Liberia never runs out of petroleum again.
Sources tell IPNEWS that another 7,000 metric tons (about 1.9 million gallons) of diesel is expected in the coming days.
This direct import means the government will now sell fuel to retailers, helping to control market prices and ensure steady supply across the country.
During the launch, President Boakai also toured and inspected major petroleum projects, new storage tanks, and a state-of-the-art testing lab, built to support this new fuel program. These buildings, which were started last year, are now completed and ready for full use.
Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC), Amos Tweh, highlighted that the move will bring real change to the petroleum market.
Tweh asserted that the facilities will help keep petroleum products safe and available at all times.
President Boakai praised the LPRC team for their hard work, calling the move “a big win for the Liberian people.”
Fuel brought in through this new system will now be sold locally at reduced prices, helping to ease the burden on drivers, businesses, and families across the country.
