The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) is expected to launch a campaign called the “Clean Note Campaign” to teach people how to handle banknotes and coins properly. This is to ensure that the Liberian currency stays in good condition.

The campaign has support from various groups including the Liberia Marketing Association, foreign exchange traders, street vendors, business associations, motorcyclists union, and cultural ambassadors. The CBL meet with commercial banks on September 17, 2025, to discuss their role in the campaign.

The official launch of the campaign will be on September 19, 2025, at the Rally Time Market in Monrovia. There will be a two-day street and community engagement exercise with entertainment and educational activities. This campaign aims to promote public discipline in currency use, reduce costs of replacing damaged banknotes, and boost confidence in the Liberian dollar.

The Central Bank of Liberia (CBL) is launching a nationwide “Clean Note Campaign” called “Our Money, Our Pride”.

    Campaign Details

The campaign addresses the significant damage to Liberian currency from improper handling like squeezing, writing, and stapling. It aims to reduce the high cost of replacing damaged money and promote national pride in the Liberian dollar.

The improper handling of the new banknotes printed in 2022 has caused approximately L$1 billion to be damaged, resulting in significant replacement costs. The campaign seeks to mitigate these costs and encourage better public handling of currency.

Activities include a float parade in Monrovia, featuring music, drama, and community involvement. Stakeholders such as banks and market associations are participating. Educational flyers will be distributed.

Damaging currency can result in a fine of L$500,000 or a two-year jail term
